Above and Beyond: Karen Gibson

Karen Gibson is an Administrative Assistant for Egypt Valley.

Tell us about how your journey led you to EVCC.
After spending the majority of my career in a membership-based health & fitness industry, I had decided to take a different direction in my employment for about five years. A little over a year ago, I found myself unsatisfied with my daily routine. A friend of mine told me about an opening in the main office at EVCC. I decided to pursue that position to see if it might be a good fit.

After getting a positive feeling as I walked through the club for my first interview, and then again when I met with Bo, I decided it was the right time for me to return to a membership-based club and am enjoying celebrating my first-year anniversary here!

As the newest member to the main office, what were your surprised to learn about EVCC?
I’ve learned a little about what it takes to meet the strict standards of having our courses groomed and prepared for our members, guest and outings. It is a year-round process and attention to detail during the winter months is just as important as during the golf season.

What is something that most members would be surprised to learn about you?
Though every class is certainly challenging, I really enjoy hot yoga. Also, I play on one of the EVCC bowling teams with some of the grounds crew.

Tell us about the EVCC bowling league and how it has helped your working relationship with your team members.
EVCC has two teams in a bowling league that they entered two years ago. After participating in an employee golf outing this past summer, I was invited to join one of the teams.

Both the employee golf outing—and now the bowling league—have been great ways for me to have interaction with employees that I might not have on a daily basis. It has provided me with the opportunity to learn more about other departments and how they interact together, as well as forming a greater appreciation for those employees and what they bring to EVCC. And the entertainment factor can never be underestimated!

If you personalized your own golf balls, what would you have imprinted on them?
Either Gibby or KLG (or possibly a martini glass)!

What do you feel your greatest achievement has been?
Personally, I’d say the fact that my husband and I have 2 children that within the last 1.5 years have graduated from college and are currently working in their field study. Our son is in Texas and our daughter in North Carolina; we’re proud parents for sure!

Professionally in my position at EVCC, I’d say creating an EVCC calendar for internal use that lists all special activities and events for our staff to monitor and update for a greater awareness throughout all departments.

What’s the best advice you have received?
Be who you are, unapologetically.
