One of the reasons Katy Lewis loves to golf is because it allows her to enjoy the great outdoors.
“It’s a great way to get outside, get some exercise and spend time with friends—and meet new ones,” said Katy, who has been golfing since she was 7-years-old. “It can be challenging sometimes, but that’s what makes it fun.”
Having grown up golfing at the Birmingham Country Club on the east side of the state, Katy always looked at golf as being a sport that she enjoyed doing for fun, rather than competitively. Eventually, Katy and her husband, Michael, lived in Chicago before returning to Michigan, this time settling in Grand Rapids.
“I actually took about five years off from playing golf while I had our three children,” Katy said, adding that when they were ready to join a club again in early 2016, Egypt Valley stood out among the rest. “We were looking for a club that had fun activities for the kids so we could get them involved in the sport early and Egypt Valley had that—in addition to the best programs, golf courses and people around!”
Today, Katy and Michael, along with their three children—Emmie, 7, Abigail, 6, and Grant, 4—stay active in the club’s many activities and tournaments. The children take part in a variety of teams and lessons including swimming, diving, tennis and golf.
The club’s Halloween party and hay rides are the highlight of the year for Abigail, who can’t wait to dress up each year.
Emmie, who earlier this year won the Junior PGA Golf 5-Hole Club Championship in the Girls Division, teamed up with Katy to win the 2019 Parent-Child Championship for their division back in June. Katy was also recently a flight winner at the 2019 Women’s Club Championship—a title she didn’t expect to win.
“I went into it thinking that it’ll be fun, but I won’t win,” said Katy. “It came down to an extra playoff hole to decide the winner and I ended up pulling it together—even with everyone there watching.”
Katy adds that part of what made the event so fun were the other women she was able to play with throughout the two days.
Something members might not know about Katy is that she owns and manages her own legal recruiting firm, where she places attorneys in positions around the country. Not to mention that she went skydiving in Switzerland when she was 20-years-old—an exhilarating and unforgettable experience.
If you see Katy and her family around the club, be sure to say, “Hello!”
