Tim and Myrna Duflo didn’t golf much until joining Egypt Valley in 2016. Since then, things have definitely changed.
“We had talked about joining a club for a year or so because we wanted to get our kids more involved with golf,” said Myrna, who is originally from Naples, Florida, but has spent most of her life in West Michigan. “We have friends that are members at the other clubs around town, but we really like everything Egypt Valley has to offer. During our visit, the kids saw the pool and fell in love—especially the girls.”
The Duflos wanted to be somewhere with a big family-friendly community, where they could also meet other adults. Tim also wanted somewhere he could bring clients and friends to play golf. Egypt Valley fit the bill, especially considering the children’s early interest in the sport.
“All of our kids started playing the game while they were pretty young,” Myrna said of their children, Ashleigh,15; Mathieu, 13; and Isabelle, 9. “Mathieu started hitting at the driving range when he was around five and the swing has always come natural to him. Ashleigh started to get into golf when we joined and has competed in the various junior golf programs but didn’t take the game seriously until the last year or so. She is now on the varsity team at Forest Hills Northern. Isabelle has been swinging clubs as well from the time we joined and is really starting to enjoy the game.”
Myrna and Tim—a Grand Rapids native and Partner for Deloitte—were very proud parents this summer when all of their children won their respective junior club championships.
“Both Mathieu and Ashleigh are the 18-hole champs and Isabelle is the girls 9-hole champ,” said Myrna. “They are all much better than mom and dad!”
When it comes to Egypt Valley’s courses, the Duflos say the scenery is a beautiful compliment to enjoyable courses.
“What is not to like about the golf course?” Myrna asked rhetorically. “You can come and play two different courses and each time you play it is a different game. I love going up on hole 7 of Valley and looking out onto the course. We also really like the more laid-back atmosphere and the kids can play golf with all of their friends.”
When the family isn’t out golfing, you’ll find the girls mostly at the pool, while Mathieu is likely on the tennis courts, driving range or eating lunch in the Trophy Room with all his golf buddies.
“For Tim and myself, you could find us on the patio for dinner and drinks,” said Myrna. “Egypt Valley is special to us because it’s a place we can go to as a family and all enjoy something we love—be it the course, pool or the tennis courts.”
The friends the Duflos and their kids have made over the years has been a highlight for the family.
“We would have never met so many great people if we weren’t here,” Myrna added.
Something other members might not realize about the Duflo family is that when they’re not dominating the green, Mathieu and Isabelle both excel at hockey and play on a travel team.
“When we’re not at the club in the summer, we are usually at the ice rink!”
If you see the Duflo family around the club, be sure to say “Hello!”
