It’s no secret Kurt and Madelon Hassberger have a long history with Egypt Valley. Kurt was born and raised in Grand Rapids and started out golfing at age 11 alongside his father, Don Hassberger, at the club when it was known as Green Ridge in 1960.
Kurt, who today works as Senior Partner at Rockford Construction, eventually became a member at the club on his own in 1978.
Madelon, who was born in St. Joseph and grew up in Bridgman, played golf twice in her life, but started playing more when the couple were married in 1979. She really became interested in the sport when the couple’s children were older and EVCC opened. Madelon, who is now retired after working 40 years in various careers, considers herself an enthusiast and plays often.
Kurt’s involvement in the club is vast, having served as president of the club twice—during the move from Green Ridge and again later at EVCC for a total of 12 board years. He has served on several committees, has been Club Champion 11 times, was in the finals of the Michigan Amateur held at EVCC in 1994, lettered at MSU, won three GR City championships, one Kent County championship and medaled in the West Michigan Districts three times.
Madelon has served on several committees over the years at the club and has held office with the Women’s Association. Madelon and Kurt were also Husband and Wife Champions in 1980.
The couple has two children— Eric (Andrea) Hassberger and Kelly (Charlie) Peterson—in addition to three granddaughters: Isla, Blaire and Elle. Though their son and his family live in Nashville, the Hassbergers are hopeful their daughter and her family will become members of the club one day.
Over the years, the couple has noticed a complete club transformation since they joined at Green Ridge.
“At one time, I was the youngest member at the club,” Madelon said. “We both love seeing all of the young families there now since we pretty much raised our children there.”
When it comes to the courses at Egypt Valley, Kurt and Madelon love the quality of the layout, the challenge, the natural beauty and having two courses to choose from.
“Egypt Valley is incredibly welcoming and since we have been there so long, it feels like family and home,” Madelon said. “Our children learned to play golf there and swam on the swim team, so there are so many fond memories.”
The couple also have many friends at the club they’ve now known for years and years.
“We also love the new friends we have made over the years,” Madelon added. “From a golf standpoint, it is a second to none facility.”
When not on the course, Madelon says the couple could be found in the dining area or bar, now that they reside by the Lakeshore and travel an hour to play golf at Egypt Valley.
Some interesting facts other members might not know about the Hassbergers is that Madelon was Kurt’s caddy in the Michigan Amateur held at EVCC in 1994 and that the family has three generations with their name on plaques in the Trophy Room.
If you see the Hassberger family around the club, be sure to say, “Hello!”
