Egypt Valley would like to congratulate our Head Golf Professional, Mike McGonigal, on receiving the 2018 Michigan PGA Merchandiser of the Year Award!
This award is a result of his outstanding dedication to Egypt Valley, which led to his nomination by fellow professionals from around the state.
According to PGA of Michigan, Merchandiser of the Year must have an exemplary retail philosophy and image, as well as examples of excellence in profit margin, stock turn, cost of goods, sales/dollars per round, inventory mix and other metrics used to evaluate golf shops. This person must possess innovation regarding displays, merchandising techniques, staff training, and the overall success and growth of their operation, in addition to continued education and advancement in the retail arena.
Mike fits the bill to a tee—pun intended.
Having served as the Head Golf Professional and buyer at Egypt Valley since January 2014, Mike has successfully increased shop sales by over 35 percent—exceeding $500,000 in total sales.
“I'm very proud to receive this award while servicing Egypt Valley Country Club and I appreciate all of the support from the Board and our General Manager, Bo," said Mike. "This award is not only for me, but also for all of the hard work of our Professional Staff—Joe, John, Landon, Richard, Steve and Tyler. Merchandising is a passion of mine and I'm proud to be recognized for this aspect of the golf business on behalf of Egypt Valley."
Mike has implemented strong standards and procedures in the golf shop for special orders, accounting for one third of the golf shop sales—something Mike says was done through taking time to train staff on product knowledge and developing Member hospitality, resulting in elevated confidence from Members.
“I’ve been able to develop strong relationships with sales representatives, which has enabled me to provide the latest product lines and trends to our Members.”
It’s clear that sales representatives also value Mike’s enthusiasm and skill.
“There are not many golf professionals I enjoy working with more than Mike McGonigal,” said Tracy Withey, a clothing representative with Dunning and Greg Norman. “Mike is very involved with buying, merchandising and making sure he has the right product for his members. Mike is always forward-thinking and in tune with current trends to keep his golf shop fresh and appealing for the Members.”
Mike looks forward to the official awards ceremony in October. Stop by the shop and congratulate him on a job well done!
