We sat down and had a conversation with Golf Course Superintendent for the Ridge Course, Aaron Kahny, to learn more about how he not only unexpectedly found a home here at Egypt Valley, but also a wife!
What brought you to EVCC and what is it you love about working there?
I actually went to culinary school and worked in the restaurant industry for most of my life before working here. At some point, I realized I wasn't happy doing that anymore and started looking for a change.
I went back to school with the idea of getting into either conservation or forestry and I began working here to get outside. After a short time, it became apparent that turf was the field I was meant to be in! So, I focused on pursuing that with Egypt Valley as my new classroom.
I love the outdoors and the work that we do here on the golf courses, but my favorite aspect of the job is the great team I get to work with every day. Everyone here has a different background and pulls from their various talents to make this property the best it can be.
We heard through the grapevine that you have a very romantic story about EVCC. Can you tell us about that?
My wife Liz and I met at the annual Hayride and Hoedown event here at EVCC. She was the pastry chef at the time and was making candied apples and other treats for the members, while I was driving the tractors.
At the end of the evening, I drove back out to the site to help load stuff up and Liz was still there packing up her supplies. I went over to help her and we just kind of casually talked while cleaning up. I had to show her how to turn the headlights on her golf cart so she could make it back to the clubhouse! A couple of days later, Kevin Thielke came up to me asking if he could give my phone number out to someone but he wouldn't say who. I immediately knew it was Liz and told him “of course!” We were married about a year later and we now have one son (Jude) and another due in June!
What is it like living with a pastry chef?
Sweet, haha! Trips to the store to randomly get 40 pounds of flour, texts to pick up four dozen eggs on the way home, etc. Liz is a phenomenal chef all the way around. I have definitely gained a few pounds since meeting her.
What’s your favorite desert Liz makes?
Either cherry pie or her cookies and cream style cookies; those are everyone's favorite.
What’s your go to playlist for being outside?
Well, we don't actually listen to music while we are out on the course for safety reasons and to remain aware of our surroundings, but lately I have been listening to a lot of 80s and synth music. The Cure, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, etc.
What is it most people don’t know about you?
I've been playing drums for 22 years.
Be sure to say “Hello” to Aaron if you see him around the club and tell him what your favorite 80s band is!
